Mount Vernon Nazarene University
The Music Department at Mount Vernon Nazarene University will perform its annual Homecoming Concert on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 1 p.m., in the R.R. Hodges Chapel/Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public.
The concert will include a variety of repertoire featuring the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Flute Choir, Goliards Chamber Choir, Treble Singers Women’s Choir, and Collegians Chorale. Our special alumni feature will be a jazz trio with saxophonist/clarinetist/vocalist Dan Jackson (Pioneer class of 1970), pianist Aaron VanValkenburg (’05), and bassist Wil Bogantz (’11).
The ensembles will combine for the finale, “Forevermore (Psalm 145)” by Travis Cottrell. All choral alumni are invited to sing. The rehearsal for the finale will begin at 11 a.m., in the Nease Rehearsal Hall in the Chapel Fine Arts Building, then continue from 11:30 to noon in the Chapel Auditorium with full accompaniment. Contact Dr. Robert Tocheff for more details and music at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Following the concert, all alumni who had any involvement in the MVNU Music Department will have the opportunity to reconnect with friends from their years at MVNU. As refreshments are served, a slide show of memories from the early years to the present will be shown. Alumni are encouraged to bring their own photos (digital or hard copy) to share. The department hopes to have representatives from all decades since MVNU’s beginning in 1968.
The MVNU Jazz Band will also perform at 3:30 p.m., in the Prince Student Union. They will play a variety of jazz styles as well as some popular classics reimagined for jazz ensemble. The concert will also feature Dr. Colin Wood, a versatile saxophonist and educator passionate about helping all musicians understand and unlock their ability to improvise. He has performed in a variety of settings and genres in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia, and has studied and performed choro and bossa nova in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. Dr. Wood currently teaches Music Theory and Jazz Studies at The Ohio State University.
